Based on the swot analysis in the book I'm developing tools to compare a canvas filled in by the ceo of the company and a canvas based on research based on facts and filled in on bases of these facts.  It shows a GAP-analysis of the perception ofthe CEO and the facts that really matters. I think this can be a enourmous addition to  the book and gives consultants and edge to advise companies in their future strategy.(s there any interest to devlop this tool on a Global Scale?

Hi Scott,

The mentor evaluation is a possibility that we will built in the web-based tools, this will make it possible to evaluate, give feedback, ask questions and so on. How this will look I don't know yet, the functionality should be in the tools.

I agree that pivots with totally new models a difficult to benchmark, starters have a kind the same problem with the canvas as they don't have a real view on the market or just adjusted their company on the market.

There is another issue concerning benchmarking and that is the way entrepreneurs take decisions. I have written a paper that I have enclosed. It appears that there can be a huge difference in the results of the entrepreneur and the researchers.  That means that that investments and loans by a bank based on a business plan still can be very dangerous.

Concerning the tools I'll answer privately.

Thank you for your thoughtful response and conference paper.

I will review and share my observations.

I sense the business model space is being opened up and explored as business planning (SWOT, SCORE, PESTL, scenario planning,....) was in the past decades.

I am hopeful that the evolution of bus modelling will address the challenges bus plans have encoucountered:

  • major drains on startup's limited time resources
  • documents (shelfware) with poor assumptions and
  • limited value to founders in dynamic operating environments

Thank you for helping shape the next generation of business modellers.

I will share lessons learned from our Gulf region early stage venture support (UAE, Palestine, MIT bus plan competition,...).  Early indications are that global mentors (those typically not in the same location as the founders coupled with business model tools (simple/few pages) can help navigate the challenges ventures face without the taxing overhead of traditional approaches.

Thanks!   Scott

Hi Scott,

This really is a challenge. The canvas is a good tool to get an overview of the business model on just one page. However we still need the external analysis to collect and analyze the proper information to be able to evaluate of the business model and to define new prototypes. This is the most part of the work to be done and I’m trying to find a way for (startup) entrepreneurs a way to do this on a pragmatic way without the extensive time spent in gathering en analyzing the data. Therefore I’m writing a book with the title: “The book for entrepreneurs that don’t read books”. This is a project what will not be finished on short notice, but is evolving slowly.

Good on ya!

Happy to collaborate as we have just completed a project supporting >40 ventures/founders using roadmap (BMG), set up a peer mentoring program using the roadmap to help group with >25 early stage ventures that rotate their mentoring every 90 days, assisted a group of entreprenuers in the MIT/GIST business plan competition,...all in the Middle East/Gulf Region.

We live in interesting times!

Scott

Interesting concept. I'm looking at a concept from the UK concerning support for Gazelle companies. How does your program looks like? Can we share these programs?

Best regards Marijn

Hello Marijin,

I am an Norwegian student in the final stages of my writing my master thesis on business models.

I have gathered data (using the canvas) from 5 fast growing and very profitable companies from different industries. I really like your evaluation template and I think it could supplement my analysis in a very good manner.

Your Excell sheet is password locked. Is it possible to get an unlocked example of your evaluation sheet? I wont spread it over the internet and I will buy you're upcoming book! :)

Best regards,

Vegard

I think so, Marijn. It´s a good idea. I saw one presentation about energy company in the engineering program at COPPE/UFRJ. It´s a good tooI for evaluation and control of results. Where are you from ?

Hi Gislane,

Do you have a link or a copy of this presentation so I can see what it can do for developing more possibilities to support entrepreneurs?

I'm from Holland and have my own management company and work for a University.
