Business Model Innovation and Social Networking - Are they related?

In my role as the social collaboration strategy lead for the consulting group at
IBM I've researched the different aspects of social collaboration and its potential benefits to the company.  My findings to day show a high degree of correlation between innovative thinking on how we work internally as well as the learning we gain from our clients through the use of our collaboration.  I was wondering what it would be like if a company published its business canvas and encouraged/facilitated internal as well as external collaboration on the canvas.  Would the company of the future be more agile, faster learning and more creative in achieving its strategic goals using this approach?  What do you think?

I am sure you could make remarkable discoveries, but I also think it would be hard for random people to understand the amount of resources a company may have, strategic objectives, policy for partnerships, etc.

Nevertheless, it could be an interesting experiment!

Hi Norbert,

You are mentioning a probably for the future ever more relevant point: sharing inner knowledge to know more collectively.

We are living in a connected world and organizations are be seen as individual players with strong ties to the whole system (stakeholder, society, suppliers, employees, customers, etc.).

So from my perspective it will make sense to open up, even the internal canvas. From our loyal stakeholders will as an organization quickly gain help and support. Business is becoming a quickly changing thing.

Check out COINS2010, which covers this fields at the beginning of October.

There is also a FB group.

We are doing this in small companies and the feed back it´s being nice!! the people improve their motivation because know they know what and why, they are doing the things.
Thanks for sharing this update Daniel.  Do share more as you progress with this approach as you can.  It will be helpful to know what works and how.

Interesting proposition, which fits ideas about a more transparent society and economy. Intuitively I would say why not?

It does, however, also raise many questions. What do you exactly mean with publish (e.g. as a picture on the website)? And will the canvas be self-explanatory? And do you want to present a more or less matured representation or have it emerge from a discussion and let it evolve? Will it be AS IS or TO BE? And will the BMG canvas always be suited (it is not strong in expressing concepts like co-creation or networking)?

Co-creation is the right word!!
External input would certainly add a different dimention to company thinking and may damage some ego's along the way. If a company has the confidence to take the external input onboard I think it could only be a good thing. The difficulty is how you get meaningfull external input without divulging confidential company information which could be accessed by the companys competitors...PQ
