The plead-for-donations model is getting really desperate. You'd think a top-50 website with 150,000 volunteer authors and 10,000,000 articles in 260 languages could generate revenue more easily.

Wow, that's almost pathetic... Why don't they, for example, combine their free wiki-based encyclopedia with renting out hosted wiki software for companies? That would leverage their existing key resources and activities and could be offered entirely through the Internet...

I never really believed in donations, not even when I helped build up a global non-governmental organization working on HIV/AIDS and malaria issues. It's just not sustainable...
Ha, wikipedia! Where do I start?!

The people that run wikipedia - their board of directors - are ideologues! They're doing everything it takes to run wikipedia according to their ideology. Business model? What business model. We have an ideology, we don't need no business model.

The reason they're getting so few donations - relatively speaking - is because there are less and less people who buy into their world view, and in extension the politics behind wikipedia. See, many people LOVE wikipedia for the value it provides to them. But if you look at the many controversies surrounding 9/11 articles, global warming articles, the price of oil or Bin Laden articles you'll notice they're always taking the stance of journalists: if the NYT or the AP didn't report it is't unsourced.

Their ideology is this: this world is still an unequal class society and we'll be damned it we let this change. We have to protect the interests of today's bourgeoisie and to do that we have to watch over the safety of the key arguments that 'rationalize' in the minds of vulgar people how the world is run today.

That's my short version ;-)

well this is easy

1. Have a tiered access to adding and editing articles. The most passionate users/writers, who want to write will be more than happy paying $20 per year for a higer level access.

I just thought of a term for people who are on the way up of thier chosen careers and are willing to contribute more than the return they can expect - "Repuation seekers".

2. I would like to donate to wikipeidia, if the process is easier. So they can use Tipjoy + twitter.

your thoughts?
