We are all preparing for the big tournament to start. The Netherlands is almost Orange, South Africa yellow and green I guess the same goes for Brazil. I can almost here the vuvuzela here in Amsterdam. Alex believes Switzerland will make it to the finals.

Co-create!
But how does the http://www.fifa.com business model look like? And how does the model of the hosting country South-Africa look like? What is the proposition, customer segments, revenue and costs? We are curious. Therefore we like to inspire you and challenge ourselves to draw the business model.

How?
First, we will build the model the next few days with help of your input. Second, we will visualize it and send it to you all as a co-created visualized model! You can then use it in your presentations, workshops, case studies as an example or nice visual.

Adapted model! (version 2)
Based on your input I modified the first set up into the 2 models FIFA and South Africa WC 2010. Take a look here... Look forward to your comments...

Cheers Patrick
This infographic might contain some helpful information

Hi Valentin

Definitely!

Thanks man, cheers Patrick
Patrick,

I would add under PARTNERS the six confederations that make FIFA (ie UEFA being the biggest) they oversee the game in the different continents and regions of the world.

I would also add FIFA Awards under Customer relations

Hi Nicolas,

Great comments. Stuff I did not know about. But now I know... FIFA Awards like player of the year, golden ball, golden shoe etc.

Great fun Patrick - thanks for thinking of this

Your hosting model is missing one very important element - the SA government. There is no event of this magnitude that can be run without government support. Canada has held two very successful Olympics and neither of them would have been possible without government money, I believe that holds true for the World Cup as well. The Canadian government (and my tax dollars) invested around $33M in the Vancouver event. The question is how do you show it in the model.

One approach would be to show the government as a partner providing resources in infrastructure funding. My preference would be to show the government as a client segment like this:

tourism investment ----> is the value to -----> SA Gov'T -----> generating revenues through -----> hosting grants and infrastructure.

Additional thoughts on the hosting model;

activities - missing advertising
resources - volunteers
costs - missing servicing FIFA licensed sponsors
revenues - I believe video rights and associated revenues belong to FIFA (though there may be some sharing)

That's all for now, got to get back - Greece-Korea have started the second half.
Hi Mike,

Your knowledge of the Vancouver Games is really helpful. I do believe that your tax dollars need a place in the model. I put SA Government as partner, Tourism investments into Resources and Grants etc. in Revenue...
Activities, Resources, Costs and Revenues: Check!

Thanks!
I go back for England vs. USA.
I think one of the major "key Partners" is the Tourism industry (e.g. hotels, entertainments, tour operators)
Hi Frank, thanks. True we will incorporate that. Cheers Patrick
Patrick,

Nice detailed business model you have there!

However, I do agree with Mike that the model misses the SA government. Although we could visualize the model with various activities including tourism, I would incorporate the the government as a revenue contributor (grants, funds, security, infrastructure, advertising - particularly banner advertising at airports, highways, buses, etc. ) as well as a profit sharing entity coming to benefit from the event (taxes, tourism, etc.). However, I guess, the government plays a much deeper role by encouraging the private sector to invest in GDP growth of SA by encouraging them to invest in infrastructure, employment initiatives, etc. and raise consumption levels.

Possibly, to take this into consideration we should show the government as a client segment like Mike pointed out and link it to directly to Fifa. This could be done by visualizing SA Government and SA Football Federation as partners benefiting from various shared revenue streams agreed to with Fifa for organization and hosting.

When we consider this, advertising revenues from on-event initiatives like vuvuzella and merchandize sales, etc become direct revenues to SA Government and SA Football Federation in the form of licensing and taxes. Also, bookie related revenues are huge but I'm not so sure about how it works. Would love to understand this bit and other comments from the masters! Thanks.

Cheers Vivek
Hi Vivek,

This is also an option depending on the viewpoint you take.
Thanks for your valuable input. If you would like to have the full version, send me an email.

I stand in awe - actually I am sitting in front of my computer in awe - of your visual sense. I love the graphic. Personally I think you have too much free time if you can produce this kind of work so quickly.

For the most part I consider myself a visual thinker, but this is on a whole other level. It is a great case study on what the power of graphic presentation can be.

Well done lads.
