looking for "Getting the Right IT: Using Business Models"

I contacted Gartner to get the report called Getting the Right IT: Using Business Models. However my start up can't afford to be a Gartner client at this time. Does anyone have a source for this? Although the book references it well I'd like to read the whole report.

did you get any response to your request (prive massege etc.)? If so or if you already got the article it would be great, if you could send me a copy. Working in the area of Business/Enterprise Architecture I am also interested in Business-IT alignment and adapting business modelling with other EA approaches (e.g. capability-based planning).

Hi Jeff,

I still did not get the article. But anyway, what was you motivation motivation to get the article? What is the field you work in?

It took my attention, because it was mentioned that especially enterprise architecture (the field I work in) could fit/could be adapted to the design of the canvas and build a tool to align business and IT more efficient. Sinde I'm having a rather business driven view on enterprise architecture I am now searching for ways to use the canvas for my purposes. Sure, the BM offers a tool that illustrates the most important factors that drive the business. Therefore I woud e.g. use it as a tool to devide my business into logical parts deriving more detailed capbilities to set this domains (maybe the parts on the Canvas) into action. My defined capabilities could be used to express requirements towards Applications and data an map them towards the capabilities.

Moreover I've already got ideas to use capabilities to assess the management of different business models within one company or plan to transform a business towards one of the "unbundled BMs" (simply said: strong infrastructure capabilities would recommend a transformation towards an Infrstruxture driven business modell if transformation is needed at all).

For now my biggest problem is to map/derive functional capabilities from the canvas.

If you have any thoughts on that let me know. I think that this is a really thrilling topic and that there are lots of people here that are interested in threads like this one and the topic of Enterprise architecture.

Maybe we can get a discussion running!

I too looked for the article mentioned and had no luck. Perhaps we could start an IT BMG group and develop our own models. Any other interest?

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for the reply. I also work in enterprise architecture.

I was using the book and canvas to re-work our business plan. When I saw the reference to "Getting the Right IT" I was eager to see if I could apply knowledge from it. I've never found it though.

Meanwhile we are splitting the model out based on our different value streams. So far it's working great. However, there are not enough hours in the day to get it completed as soon as I'd like with everything else on my plate.

I'd be open to developing a model specific to IT. However I'd need more time with the canvas to fully understand how it should be revised to relate to the IT business.

Probably the report is hard to get because it is a commercial product and just like you not many people can or want to pay for it. So you will probably not get many reactions.

When it comes to business models and IT, have a look at ‘Place to Space’ of Weill and Vitale (2001). As opposed to BMG/Canvas, this more explicitly links with IT.

More in general BMG/Canvas is not the only approach out there, and some other approaches have things to offer (still) missing in BMG/Canvas. See for a short discussion also an overview I made here.

This was my job for 25 years business and It alignment. I don't have the subscription anymore from Gartner but it seems a very intesting report. At the moment I don't have lots of time. I;m willing to participate in making a BMG and IT alignment document or model or whatever. Just let me know what I can do and I'll try to find some time.

I am Microsoft SharePoint consultant, and incorporated the canvas as a way to look at running an internal SharePoint organization - how do you generate value with your SharePoint implementation?

I wanted to briefly make the argument that you would want to integrate the usage of SharePoint to your business model, but if you don't know your business model, start by creating your SharePoint business model (by looking at your SharePoint implementation as an internal services organization).
