Hi. I'm UK based ina local authority public sector. I'm seeking examples of how others may of applied the canvas approach to looking at how to 'monetise' public sector offers to customers. I am in teh process of leading aproject to consider this in my own organisation and would be interested in seeing if there were other public sector users out there. Thanks

Seems like this might be a very interesting topic for UK based BMG groups and practitioners.

There have been a couple of inquiries form members who are looking at how local government can create innovation and new revenue streams driven by changes in the central government funding.

Last year I had some conversations with Ben Rowland, located in London. Recently Nigel Adams, in Buckingham, has broached a similar subject.

There is also a London group that may be interested in discussing the subject:

I have done some work with our Federal government, but not much on local government side.

If I were facilitating this conversation, my initial questions would be mostly around the client segments you would have identified. It would be very important to understand what needs they have that are unmet, or underserved in the current environment; to make sure you have a deep understanding of the target segments. Then create an offer to address those needs.

It is a common situation, particularly in public sector government environments, for the business people to define and understand their business by what they 'do' rather than by the 'value' that it creates for their clients. The major shift in thinking, to adopt a business model innovation approach, is to understand and make client needs the core driver of the model.

Though I am unfamiliar with your government structure, I would suggest the client-value proposition is still the most important starting point to BMI. I have worked with individual business lines, branches, and departments of our federal government and it is always the starting point for the discussion.

Thanks for the reply. Nigel Adams is workign with us, hence his inquiry no doubt.

I will track down Ben now.

We're doing exactly as you suggest as part of the early work so obviously great minds think alike.

Thanks again

Hi,

I have just exchanged emails with Nigel Adams. Happy to provide whatever input I can.. I haven't worked directly for a LA but recently ran a BMW Canvas based workshop for a social work related charity so fairly adjacent to local authorities.

I had some contact with someone about a year ago who consults to LAs and has subsequently become a self appointed BMC consultant! I wasnt happy with his style of working so I didn't progress the relationship.

I agree that more structured and innovative thinking around these types of issues would be really valuable to LAs.

Good luck

Tim
