Telecom is so big industry , u r from equipment vendor , from operator , from CP , SP or from subcontractor , each of the roles have different value proposition ,U question is too big to reply . you have to narrow down

Spesifiec is better to create VP. If general is to wide area must look for in telecomunication we look for general VP: have a wide coverage area, low cost operation, customize bye customer and low charge for customer.....

this afternoon , i asked our colleague , do you think our client( a telecom operator) has done the all the things for communication ? I gave them so many examples to illustrate they have not done all,far away from all . A lot of operators , in my eyes , are going to the wrong way , for they are too much distracted by kind of applications, for they are jealous of Apple success but forget the key role they have not play into extreme, that is Communication !
I do suggest all the operators back to the basic point of your business , Communication , ask do you really done all the things for better human being's communication ?
Communication (full dimension , high value communication ) should be you first VP . in this frame , to explore more , to create more , to image more....

I worked for the telecom industry some years as an strategy & business innovation/ transformation, but mine is just one perfpective among many others.
Here is my perspective...
The value chain technically speaking for the Telecom Industry is composed in
transport => switching => Access => (Content) The latter being a new echelon in the value chain since all operators are providing some kind of content within their network (produced by themselves) and this content can be: apps, information content, etc.
One important macroprocess in the telecom (and other utilities industries as well) is the "billing" process.
You can refer to e-Tom process framework for more information.
Also, you will find more info from ITU regarding value chain and current state of the telecom industry.
