Business Model Foundry - the iPad app

Some of you know that we are working on an iPad app to help entrepreneurs and intra-preneurs develop innovative business models. We decided to do this as transparently as we have for the book. Please join us on our journey and give us your feedback!

In the slides below we outlined the specs for a minimal viable (app) product (MVP). It is the "heart" of the app we are developing and it will obviously evolve into something more sophisticated over time. But we want to test the MVP with… Continue

Full Preview of Business Model Generation to Shorten the Waiting

The books have left the logistics center and are on the way to your home. It will take 6-13 days for them to arrive (we would have loved to make that shorter, too ;-)

To shorten the waiting time, however, we give you a full digital preview. Since Business Model Generation is a very tactile book it is, of course, nothing close to the real thing. That is one of the reasons why we are not selling any ebooks at the moment. The format & design does simply not come over right on… Continue

Preview of Business Model Generation

As I mentioned earlier we will send you the finished book for free (rather than at the 50% discount that was initially foreseen for the Hub). It is going to production these days.

In the meantime you may want to download the entire Business Model Canvas section and some additional spreads as a pdf document. Don't hesitate to forward it - we… Continue

Book Printing, Pricing and Distribution Issues...

On Monday and Tuesday Alan Smith and I were in the Netherlands to visit the book printer, book binder, and cover printer together with Patrick Pijl. The whole visit was organized by Maarten Modderman who is specialized in printing special books.

I made a little video below that shows some images of the visit. Most interestingly, at 0:35 into the video Mike Silva of the book binding company explains the special technique they will… Continue

Cover Design Continued

After agonizing over the right type of cover and asking you for your profile photos we had to go down a completely different route based on production constraints. We came back to the initial designs, but slightly changed the concept. The cover will be printed on a sort of cardboard, which goes with the special format of our book that will allow you to keep it open & flat on a table. Find the designs and a cool video of "the making of the cover" below.

Here Alan's… Continue

Today is a big day: we got the ISBN number for Business Model Generation: 978-2-8399-0580-0. We're getting there.

Also, Alan has been working on some book covers. Check out some of the iterations below:

Random thoughts on what this book is about FOR the book cover design

What will people say about the book 5 years from now?

This book has made business (model) thinking accessible to thousands of people worldwide (not only business people). It has helped countless organizations (large corporations, start-ups, non-profits, …) better understand their business models and come up with new ones. Most interestingly, the book has proven its points by « walking the talk »: based on an innovative business model / made accessible to a much broader… Continue

Photos of the prototype of the special limited (unfinished) edition of Business Model Generation (200 prints only)

For the 19th of June we will publish a special (unfinished) limited edition that will only be printed 200 times. The final book is scheduled for September 1st. Have a look at the prototype for the limited edition:…

Book Writing Retreat at La Sage

Since yesterday, Tuesday, I am staying at a tiny place called La Sage up in the Swiss Alps. The goal is to isolate from the world and focus on advancing with the book. All it takes is here: an inspiring place, a laptop and a WiFi connection.

Here some photos of the atmosphere:

The view

The workspace

The material…

Book Design Meeting Lausanne

Last week we had a great book design meeting with Yves Pigneur, Alan Smith, Patrick van der Pijl and Mike Overdijk from JAM. Things are falling in place. Alan will soon post some reviewed and designed book chunks on the Hub.

Furthermore, together with Mike from JAM, a visual thinking company, we started some sketches to visualize the business model canvas. As you know, we strongly believe in visual thinking - hence we practice what…

Business Model Hub Conference and Book Launch Party: 19. June '09. Will you join?

I am really happy to pre-announce that we are planning a conference and book launch party in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, on Friday, June 19. 2009. Amsterdam was the place where we made the decision to write the book after wanting to do it for several years.

The main focus of this event is to bring people from the Hub together in a physical location so we can get to know each other better and share experiences around business model innovation. Knowledge sharing and… Continue

Guiding the desing: the brand personas

Today I spent a couple of hours brainstorming on what this book shall be all about. Not the content, but the look & feel of the content of the book. It will help give the book design a direction. It will help give Alan, the design mind behind the book, some guidance to unfold his design talent to bring this book to another level. Based on a couple of dozen post-its I came up with a brand personas (first… Continue

Book Title - second try!

Wow - if I had known what it meant to have over 200 people help write a book, I would have... done it again. You challenged the book title thoroughly. It was annoying and inspiring at the same time... and... you were absolutely right to do so. The proposed titles didn't work and you pointed to all the right reasons.

Wonderful! This was a great experience. It is a beautiful example of simple prototyping and testing with the collective intelligence of the Hub. Now we are in the second… Continue

Mindmap of Book Structure & Polls

I created a mindmap of the book structure with Mindmeister, as suggested. I'm still experimenting with using and sharing this mindmapping tool... so forgive me if it doesn't work 100% yet. Since I can't post the mindmap in this blog I added it to the "Book Chunks Section". Have a look!

I'm also experimenting with… Continue

The 1st Book Chunk is Out: Overview

It's quite a big moment for me. Yves & I are floating our first raw book chunk!!!! This first chunk is more of an overview of what is coming, rather than content as such. It's an outline of the structure of the book and should give you an idea of what we are up to. It’s our big picture. We are curious if you like it. Do you find it interesting? Is it clear? Is it relevant to you? Are we missing out on some essential parts?

Some remarks regarding this first book chunk and a brief… Continue

Christmas Present

This week I have been working on the 1st book chunk. I'd like to make it a small X-mas present for you, though I am not advancing nearly as quickly as I hoped (due to workshops, planning meetings, teaching, etc.). In the photo below you can see my brainstorming on the outline and content of the chunk (other photos here).

The 1st book chunk will not be an actual piece of the book. It… Continue

Challenges for a Disruptive Book on Business Model Innovation...

It is wonderful to see how many people have already signed-up to the book chunk project. Some very bright minds are gathering on our HUB.

However, I have mixed feelings and am a little afraid of failure these days. Business guru, Clayton Christensen has just published an article on business model innovation and he is working on a book, too. He has a whole team, a Harvard Business School Professorship, Harvard Business School Press and a PR agency to count on. His team seems to say… Continue
