I agree, the modeling canvas bridges conventional strategic thinking with business model innovation.

Its interesting to this author's interpretation of the words design vs. strategy and innovation applies to each. I say interesting because the label you give innovation (strategy or design) has a high degree of overlap and what is most important is the type of results you get from how you lead your business. If you are able to communicate and/or alter your strategy with proven results vs. doing it through innovation, in the end you have acted on both strategy and design. So in short what is most important to me is what do you do to produce results and either could work. The benefit of the modeling canvas is that it can describe, visualize and reflect your strategy as well as inspire innovation which can later your strategy.
