I've posted a new article on the Lean Startup Business Model Pattern - integrating the two schools of Lean Startup Methodology and Business Model Innovation. To what extent do you see that the Lean Startup method or Lean Development in general can be interpreted as a business model pattern?

Hi Nicky,

I am currently looking into whether the software development paradigm makes a good parallel to the merger of BMO and Lean Startup. For an example UML is not a development method by itself, but rather a notation used with methods such as RUP and XP. Similarly, if BMO can be viewed as a standard way to visualize a business's (system) architectural blueprints, Lean Startup would be the process framework intended to improve business quality and responsiveness to changing customer requirements. That is, whether the Lean Startup methodology need is own UML.

Along the same axis, I think Steven Blank does a great post on using the Lean Startup to process the BMO. However, I am not sure if the right thing would be to cram the two models into one. I look forward to seeing further elaborations from Steven Blank and Ann Miura-Ko on the subject.

Indeed, Salim make some good points on the "pattern". It would be interesting to join in on one of your London meetups. What are your key take-aways from discussing BMO + LeanStartup?

Let's keep in touch.

Hi Tor, I have just made the connection that you are a hub member - my partner Salim Virani had engaged with your blog post? He has been helping set up the Lean Startup community for entrepreneurs in London so we have been having lots of healthy debate about the cross over and distinctions with BMgen! It's a really interesting area. Have you seen Steve Blank's more recent post which discusses Customer Development in relation to Business Model Generation and Lean Startup? http://steveblank.com/2010/01/25/whats-a-startup-first-principles/
